I used to think that the right’s hypocritical views of cancel culture were always over the top. However, this story actually lends credibility to concerns over cancel culture across the country. TikTok star Addison Rae’s simple introduction of herself to Donald Trump is enough for some online to actually call for her being canceled.

What Happened?

20-year-old TikTok star Addison Rae is under fire for shaking hands with former President Donald Trump. At the UFC Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor fight in Las Vegas, Addison Rae approached the former president.

Rae tapped Trump on the shoulder and introduced herself, saying “Hi, I’m Addison. Nice to meet you. I have to say hi. Hello. So nice to meet you.”

Footage of her introduction to Trump went viral on Twitter, earning her the ire of many online. Many people are speculative about Rae’s political affiliation. Rumors about her being a Republican spread across the Internet in 2019, which she has denied.

What’s So Controversial?

Many users on Twitter commented about why Addison Rae felt it was necessary for her to meet with someone like Trump.

Some users described Rae as a “performative activist,” taking up causes only when it is convenient or when there is enough pressure to acceptably do so.

Some users acknowledged that she was likely to be canceled due to other users online.

I see nothing controversial about Addison Rae simply introducing herself to Donald Trump. I can’t stand sites like TikTok and Twitter just because of how widespread users like the ones above are on those sites.

How does Addison Rae introducing herself to Trump even affect anyone?

It Makes Sense

Addison Rae is worth about $5 million and has over 80 million followers online. She is a native of Louisiana but lives in Los Angeles.

It makes a lot of sense for Addison Rae to be a Republican and supporter of Trump if she indeed is one. The Republican Party prioritizes policies like tax cuts and deregulation, policies that would realistically be in Rae’s personal interest to support.

While it’s true that many celebrities in Hollywood are socially liberal and align with the Democratic Party, I’m surprised that so many are outspoken on their political affiliation for the Democrats. There are a few outspoken conservative celebrities such as Mel Gibson and Jon Voight.

Mel Gibson in 1990.

Their support of Democrats is in my opinion a hinderance in the Democrats being able to appeal to regular people.

It seems that celebrities supporting Democrats over Republicans should be the exception rather than the rule as supporting Republican policies is in the economic self-interest of many wealthy celebrities in Hollywood.

Conclusion

Overall, this story has been blown way out of proportion. While there are far more important issues for normal people than cancel culture of celebrities, the issue is still an important one. Small stories like this tie into greater discussions over free speech and the role that celebrities ought to play in our politics and society.

No, Addison Rae should not be canceled simply for introducing herself to someone whose economic policies are in her own self-interest. And if it just so happens the Addison Rae is Republican, who cares? It would make sense for her to be one anyways.
