Good Intentions, Bad Results: Biden Administration Veers HARD in Wrong Direction on Censorship and Free Speech

The Biden administration admitted that they are collaborating with social media companies in removing “problematic posts” across various sites.

In an effort to protect Americans’ health from the coronavirus pandemic, the Biden administration is worsening a less potent, yet more long-term ailment to the country. The administration is ramping up efforts to de-platform and censor sources disinformation across various social media platforms like Facebook, damaging free speech in the long-term.

Government and Social Media Work Together

Jen Psaki, Biden’s press secretary said that “we are in regular touch with these social media platforms, and those engagements typically happen through members of our senior staff, but also members of our COVID-19 team.”

An outright admission that the administration is working with big tech on “disinformation research” is troubling and is a bad direction for the nation to head down.

There are terrible people online. There are uninformed people online. There are some people online who spread lies while knowing the truth. There are some who spread lies, believing that they are spreading truth.

While the administration is honorable for trying to save Americans from disinformation regarding COVID-19 and vaccines, their collaboration with big tech will only continue to harm Americans long after the pandemic is over.

Free Speech as a Principle

The precedent that government and big tech collusion sets is a bad one, establishing future justifications for more censorship.

Instances of alleged voter fraud, future war, and civil unrest are all probable instances in which further censorship and regulation of speech can occur.

This should not be viewed as a liberal versus conservative battle. Every American should take the side of free speech, no matter which side of the political spectrum you fall on.

Free speech is one of America’s most treasured values, and it is also one of the hardest values to protect.

Just last week, I struggled to defend the free speech of white nationalist, Nick Fuentes.

The Biden administration must limit their involvement with big tech and social media companies. Those companies need to be treated as a zone for free speech so that Americans can truly begin living up to that ideal once again.

No matter how good one’s intentions are, censorship and regulation of speech are always long-term harms.

  1. IMO, people are taking things way too critical. They analyze everything down to nothing and then start their complaints and all too often radical responses. Free speech is a thing of the past as each word will and can offend someone, somewhere.
Good luck in your future endeavors, Quentin. It is a pleasure meeting you.

    1. That’s exactly right! I really enjoy your site’s focus on World War II in the Pacific. I live on O’ahu just near Pearl Harbor, so the war is engrained in my island’s history. Even though I’m new at blogging, I love looking to longtime bloggers like yourself who are passionate and devoted to their blogging topics. Thank you for the comment!
