22 House Republicans voted against granting Capitol Police the Congressional Gold Medal after they defended the U.S. Capitol during the January 6th insurrection. The House Vote was 406-21, passing with overwhelming bipartisan support. This move by the 22 Republicans was utterly hypocritical and ungrateful since the police defended the lives of these Congressional members.

Especially due to the fact that these Republicans weren’t voting on actual policy and legislation in regards to police reform, their opposition was a slap in the face to the police that in the end was for no reason at all. Prominent House Republicans like Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Lauren Boebert (R-CO), and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) were among the 22 Republicans who refused to grant the medal to the officers.

All the Representatives who voted “no” were:

Andy Biggs (Ariz.), Lauren Boebert (Colo.), Michael Cloud (Texas), Andrew Clyde (Ga.), Warren Davidson (Ohio), Matt Gaetz (Fla.), Louie Gohmert (Texas), Bob Good (Va.), Paul Gosar (Ariz.), Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.), Andy Harris (Md.), Jody Hice (Ga.), Mary Miller (Ill.), Barry Moore (Ala.), Ralph Norman (S.C.), Scott Perry (Pa.), John Rose (Tenn.), Matt Rosendale (Mont.), Chip Roy (Texas) and Greg Steube (Fla.).

Reports from several House members also claim that Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) refused to shake hands with Officer Michael Fanone of the D.C. Metro Police after he learned that Fanone was a defender of the Capitol on January 6th.

After months of fearmongering of Democrats who want to “defund the police,” these elected Republicans – not street activists, spit in the face of police who protected their lives. The Republican mantra “Back the Blue” was simply a voting scam for conservatives as these House members can’t even show a shred of gratefulness to the officers who defended them. How ungrateful and soulless do you need to be to refuse basic gratitude to someone?

Some Republicans opposed the usage of the words “insurrection,” claiming that the usage of the word was partisan. However, if not insurrection, what does one call an attempt to forcefully halt the certification of election results?

On the same day of this vote, several prominent Republicans like Tucker Carlson began spreading the idea that the FBI was actually behind the Capitol insurrection. This is dangerous and absolutely insane, especially after the earlier claim that Antifa and Black Lives Matter were behind the Jan 6 riot rather than actual Trump supporters. However, if that were true, then wouldn’t Senate Republicans have wanted an investigation into that day to clear their name?

January 6 and its consequences are all so crazy, and this refusal by 22 Republicans to even grant an award to the officers who defended the Capitol is unnecessarily cold-hearted and cruel.
