Following President Biden’s announcement that he has decided to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan, thereby ending the longest war in American history, much of Washington D.C.’s greatest actors are lining up in a show of force against him.
Democrats such as Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Republicans such as Lindsey Graham (R-SC) are forming bipartisan blocks to counter Biden’s decision.
In the media, article headlines such as “Afghanistan: ‘We have won the war, America has lost’, say Taliban” by the BBC, and “Afghans Wonder ‘What About Me?’ as US Troops Prepare to Withdraw” by The New York Times show opposition from the establishment.
Some conservative outlets such as The National Review support Biden’s decision to withdraw, with headlines such as “Joe Biden Is Right to Want to Leave Afghanistan.”
With vocal critics and war hawks like Lindsey Graham and Liz Cheney (R-WY) promoting continued presence and forever wars in the Middle East, Joe Biden must remain unmoved by these actors and follow through with the promise he made to Americans, veterans, active duty personnel and their families. This war has devastated an entire American generation, and it now seems like the pain can stop.
I hope and pray that this war ends and that Biden and his supporters in government can overcome the powerful, insidious forces in Washington that want this war to rage on forevermore.
