I am sick and tired hearing about how the Russians interfered in U.S. elections. Today, an intelligence community report found that Russia interfered in the 2020 election to “denigrate Joe Biden.” Americans don’t need Russians to tell them about Biden’s flaws. According to CNN, the report also found that Russian goals included undermining confidence in the 2020 election and democracy.
We’ve been down this road before back in 2016 when the Democrats and the intelligence community believed Donald Trump was Putin’s puppet because Putin supported Trump over Clinton. Elaborate hearings, meetings, dossiers, and phone calls spammed cable news, and in Washington, Russian collusion was all anyone talked about.
Whether or not this is true, I don’t care. Such allegations distracted both the Democratic and Republican parties from doing anything which would have helped the American people. Hillary Clinton blamed her loss on Russian interference, even though she lost key states in the Rust Belt by assuming they were safe. The first investigation into Russian interference which launched Robert Mueller to prominence fell flat and the investigation found that Trump was safe.
In 2020, the same tactics were used by the media and the Democratic establishment who accused Bernie Sanders of being supported by Russia following his stunning upset in the Nevada Caucus. As the general election drew nearer, Donald Trump himself raised questions about the security of the election, claiming that early-voting and voting by mail would corrupt the election. Such misinformation over the election was a large factor in the January 6th Insurrection at the Capitol.
Now, with this latest report, the media is repeating the cycle all over again, creating a modern state of McCarthyism and continuing to erode U.S.-Russian relations. These investigations into Russian interference and labelling political enemies as Russian plants is stupid and dimensionless, allowing for infinite distractions to consume the time and effort that lawmakers should spend fighting for the issues that matter to everyday Americans. It’s far easier to hold an investigation into someone’s loyalties than debating over wage increases, reducing war, increasing healthcare and other basic issues that Americans actually care about.
I’m tired of hearing about Russian interference, and when the Russians “interfere,” all they do is spread misinformation online which Donald Trump has already done himself. I’m done with it, and I just want it all to finally go away.
